SCS Faculty Offer Letter Policy
Offer letters for regular faculty positions (teaching, research and tenure tracks) should originate from the Dean's office. Offers for special faculty, including systems track faculty, post docs and visiting faculty should originate from the department head of the relevant department. Once a hiring committee has identified a candidate to which an offer should be made, the offer process should be initiated by sending email to the Dean's office. The Dean, usually through SCS Council, will review the hiring materials and prepare the offer letter.
Note that according to CMU policy, the Dean is responsible for ensuring appropriate hiring processes are followed. In addition, in subsequent years the Dean is expected to present the reappointment and promotions cases for these faculty at the university level. Requiring offer letters for regular faculty to originate from the Dean's Office is consistent with these responsibilities.
